Why Was the Temple Jesus Cleansed TWICE, Destroyed in A.D. 70?

Did you ever wonder why the same Temple Jesus cleansed twice (once at the beginning and then at the end of His ministry) was destroyed in A.D. 70?

http://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/questions/16881/why-did-jesus-cleanse-the-temple

https://answersingenesis.org/jesus-christ/when-did-jesus-cleanse-the-temple/

Did you ever wonder why God said He divorced the Jews as His chosen people long before Jesus cleansed the Temple twice?

Jer 3:8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.

Did you ever wonder why Ellen White said that Jesus would cleanse His Temple, while she also prophesied that Ezekiel 9 destruction would begin at His Sancruary, His Temple, His church? Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 211. (The chapter begins on p. 207, quoting Ezekiel 9).

Jesus was Prophetically Acting Out the Coming Destruction of the Temple

One of the most telling signs that a person is a neophyte in the Word of God, is his/her teaching that the apostate church will be cleansed and purged of all the dross at the coming of the National Sunday Law, to leave it the church triumphant. The reference to the Will Ross statement below, is a typical teaching of professing Seventh-day Adventists on the cleansing of the church BY EZEKIEL 9 DESTRUCTION BEFORE THE NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW.

Todd Wolcott and followers teach this serious error. Todd teaches that Ezekiel 9 judgment will cleanse and purge the church, so that a pure people will remain to give the Loud Cry. In its first literal fulfillment, Ezekiel 9 was not intended to cleanse and purify the Jews in A.D. 70. It was to destroy the dross--Ezekiel 22:17-31. It was not to cleanse anything or to rain down the Holy Spirit on anything! (Verse 24)!

Eze 22:24   Son of man, say unto her, Thou art the land (Jerusalem and the Temple in context) that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation.

In other words, apostate Jerusalem and the Temple were not cleansed by the Ezekiel 9 destruction of A.D. 70, nor were they rained upon by the Holy Spirit. Ellen White said that Ezekiel 9 will be literally fulfilled. That DESTRUCTION did not purify and cleanse the church in its first literal fulfillment, NOR WILL IT CLEANSE AND PURIFY THE CHURCH IN THE NEXT LITERAL FULFILLMENT. It is the final destruction of the apostate church and ultimately the world, in that its first fulfillment in A.D. 70 PREFIGURED both, The Great Controversy, p. 25. Now the statement that foolish virgin “Adventists” use to teach that Ezekiel 9 judgment and destruction will purge and purify the church BEFORE the Sunday Law and the Loud Cry:

TO THE c.1908 STATEMENT BY WILL ROSS
The testimony of W. E. Ross was witnessed by various church members in the
Boulder, Colorado area many times. Below is given a written testimony of
two of these witnesses who heard Brother Ross relate this experience
many times, and each time without any variation.

The first of the two living witnesses that answered to the request of
many letters of inquiry concerning the statement by Brother Ross is as
follows:

Loveland, Colo. Nov. 4, 1980

“Your letter of inquiry concerning the statement of Brother Ross is at hand, and will write you a few lines pertaining to it. Yes, I have been acquainted with him for years. He attended the Boulder Seventh-day Adventist church, but passed away around 1945. I have heard him make the statement many times, which I am enclosing for you. Brother Elmer Johnson also heard him make the statement. He is still living north of Boulder. “You can depend on this statement as coming from a reliable source, for Brother Ross was visiting with Sister White many, many times. He told us many of his experiences while visiting with her.

“What brother Ross mentions in this testimony, is a statement which Sister White made while they were standing at the railroad depot waiting for the train, and then Will Ross related it to us as nearly as he could recall the words from her mouth. “Personally, I am looking for that ‘Storm’ that is mentioned in this statement by Brother Ross, to begin very, very soon now. I think that it is closely related to the Judgment of the Living time.

“For your convenience I have taken time to type just a few of the references out, that I think are the same or related to this Will Ross Testimony. Please look them up and place along with this ‘Storm’ that is coming.

“1). Mal..3:1-4; Zech. 13:7-9; 6 Testimonies, 195 . . . “Overflowing Scourge.”
“2). Matt. 3:12; 5 Testimonies 80; Testimonies to Ministers, 431; Early Writings, 49...”Overflowing Scourge.”
3). Isa. 28:1-22; Ezek. 12:21-28;—”No further delay.”
4). Ezek. 13:1-16 “Wall” goes down.
“5). 6 Testimonies, 401— “Storm.”
“6). 1 Testimonies, 190 - “Whetting His sword ...To cut them down.”
“7). Ezek. 9; 3 Testimonies, 226-227; 5 Testimonies 211-212; 7 Bible Commentary, 911.

“To sum it up as I see it now, it is something like this: The Lord is going to send trouble in the form of a ‘storm’ that is like a windstorm or whirlwind, perhaps an upset of our government or uprising in some form which brings in real trouble for Seventh-day Adventists.
It will clean out the spurious from the genuine and separate the dross from the gold in the church. In 7 Bible Commentaries, 911, it is called “A
terrible ordeal.” Look up that word in your dictionary, please. She goes on to say that it is necessary in order to separate the chaff from the grain. Personally, I think that this pictures to us the beginning of the ‘Judgment of the Living.’
Malachi 3:1-4 states that He ‘will suddenly come to His temple ... and sits and refines.’ Christ came suddenly to His temple in the fall of 1844, but that was to begin the Judgment of
the dead. We must remember that many, many Bible texts have a double application, or a secondary and primary application. The same must be remembered when we try to study out of the books of Daniel and Revelation, or other Old Testament prophets.
For an example just read slowly Jeremiah 4:1-23; Isaiah 66:15-16: “Lord will come with fire ...whirlwind ... fire and sword... plead ... standeth to Judge ... Judgment with the ancients of His people.” This is all I have time for now, but I have given you these references to put with the Will Ross statement so that you will have no question, but that it all fits into a picture of the coming persecution which is created by the ‘storm’ which the Lord permits to come in order to secure a pure, clean, people in Israel, that they may be entrusted with the Latter Rain. For no Latter
Rain will be poured out right now, for we have too many who are only “chaff” and will blow away on the ‘wind’ that comes.

The above statement confuse a number of different issues, reckoning them all as one and the same thing, to wit:

·       It confuses the shaking with judgments that God causes to come upon His people because of their waywardness, such as the judgment God permitted to come upon ancient Israel when she was taken into Babylonian CAPTIVITY for the God intended purpose that she would be reformed--NOT DESTROYED.

·       It confuses Ezekiel 9 destruction with judgments that are coming upon the church and the world to awaken all who will be awakened.

·       It confuses the final end-time “overflowing scourge” with the shaking and judgments intended to awaken God’s people. Ellen White’s references to an overflowing scourge refer to the end of time and the quick work that God was doing on the earth would soon be cut short in righteousness:” “As I viewed poor souls dying for want of the present truth, and some who professed to believe the truth were letting them die by withholding the necessary means to carry forward the work of God, the sight was too painful, and I begged of the angel to remove it from me. I saw that when the cause of God called for some of their property, like the young man who came to Jesus (Matthew 19:16-22) they went away sorrowful, and that soon the overflowing scourge would pass over and sweep their possessions all away, and then it would be too late to sacrifice earthly goods, and lay up a treasure in heaven. {EW 49.1} The suffering Jesus, His love so deep as to lead Him to give His life for man, was again held up before me; also the lives of those who professed to be His followers, who had this world’s goods, but considered it so great a thing to help the cause of salvation. The angel said, “Can such enter heaven?” Another angel answered, “No, never, never, never. Those who are not interested in the cause of God on earth can never sing the song of redeeming love above.” I saw that the quick work that God was doing on the earth would soon be cut short in righteousness and that the messengers must speed swiftly on their way to search out the scattered flock. An angel said, “Are all messengers?” Another answered, “No, no; God’s messengers have a message.” {EW 49, 50.1}

·       Ezekiel 9 destruction was NEVER designed by God to be a cleansing tool. It was and will be used as a final destruction tool to destroy an apostate church and people. Ezekiel 22:17-31, WITH NO “RAIN” HOLY SPIRIT CLEANSING--ONLY DESTRUCTION BY BURNING AND MELTING.

Ellen White said that Adventists think they are all right, when they are ALL WRONG! In my 74 years as a Seventh-day Adventist, I have never ONCE met any Adventist who taught the truth on the meaning of the cleansing and purging of the church.

“The Testimony For The Church—The Laodicean Church—What greater deception can come upon human minds than a confidence that they are right when they are ALL WRONG?”  Testimonies, Vol. 3, pp. 253, 254.

A proper understanding of the cleansing of the Temple, PAST AND FUTURE, is a classic example as to how Adventists are ALL WRONG on this issue. They mistakenly believe that the apostate SDA church will be cleansed and purged of all the bad, leaving only the good, and that the church militant (good and bad, wheat and tares co-dwelling church) will become the church triumphant. Nothing could be further from the truth, and history and true Bible teaching on this issue proves this fact.

The Biblical act of cleansing the temple is one of the most misunderstood teachings in all the Bible! Jesus was and is prophetically acting out the A.D. 70 destruction of the Temple and the final destruction of His Sanctuary, Temple, Church, at the end-time. http://hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/questions/16881/why-did-jesus-cleanse-the-temple

The word “cleanse” is not an appropriate description of Jesus’ actions as it DOES NOT mean cleaning up an apostate church, but rather destroying it, per the above link. He was not cleansing the temple so that it was not destroyed, because it was destroyed in A.D. 70! He was/is attacking the professed Temple! The apostate temple must be removed, and that is exactly what happened/happens according to history and the Bible.

Jesus prophesied that the Temple He “cleansed” twice, would be destroyed and that one stone would not be left upon the other! How does that constitute the bad being shaken from the good, leaving the Temple intact, with all the bad being shaken out of and from the Temple?

Long before the Temple was destroyed in A.D. 70, Ezekiel prophesied that the dross (bad) would be gathered into the Temple of Jerusalem to be burned and melted and that the Temple and land of Jerusalem WOULD NOT BE CLEANSED nor blessed with the Holy Spirit:

The Church and the World as the Field Where the Tares (Dross) are Burned

The gross ignorance of SDA’s concerning the true meaning of the cleansing and purging of the church, is not God’s fault; it is not Ellen White’s fault! God’s Word tells us exactly where the dross is gathered (Ezekiel 22:17-31), and that a faithful remnant goes forth out of the professing church, Isaiah 37:31, 32).

Ellen White told us that the church and the world are the field. We know that tares are burned in the field and neither constitutes God’s garner (barn).

"The 'field,' Christ said, 'is the world.' But we must understand this as signifying the church of Christ in the world. The parable is a description of that which pertains to the kingdom of God, His work of salvation of men and this work is accomplished through the church. True, the Holy Spirit has gone out into all the world everywhere it is moving upon the hearts of men but it is in the church that we are to grow and ripen for the garner of God." Christ's Object Lessons, p. 70

Ellen White Applies Ezekiel 9 to the Final Destruction of the Apostate SDA Church and the World

Why in the world would anyone apply Ezekiel 9 as a means of cleansing the church before the National Sunday Law, when the last literal fulfillment of Ezekiel 9 only destroyed the Jewish church? The Great Controversy, Chapter 1, is a historical record of the literal fulfillment of Ezekiel 9. Ellen White says that Ezekiel 9 will be literally fulfilled again. If Ezekiel 9 had no cleansing and/or purifying role in its last literal fulfillment, how could that be the role of any future literal fulfillment? How could Ezekiel 9 ever be associated with purifying and cleansing of the church when it says that men, maidens and little children will be killed without mercy? Testimonies, Vol. 5, p. 211.

It is true that judgments will come to awaken God’s people and the world, and that God’s true remnant will be blamed for those judgments, but they are entirely different from final Ezekiel 9 destruction beginning at God’s Sanctuary, His church, and ending with the world, GC, pp. 653-656.

Will Ross Statement by Elmer M. Johnson

Bro. Will Ross now deceased was a personal friend of mine for about 45 years. In our church fellowship we very often spent Sabbath afternoons discussing his experience in the message, and his conversations with Mrs. Ellen G. White.

About 1908, while living in Loma Linda near Sister White, he frequently accompanied her in her walks, and would discuss the message and future events. On one of these occasions, while waiting at the railroad depot, in company with Sister McInterfer and Elder D. E. Robinson, her granddaughter's husband, Sister White related to the three of them about the storm of persecution that was to come upon Seventh-day Adventists. Brother Will related it to me as follows:

"Sister White told us as we three stood there on the depot platform, that a terrible storm of persecution was coming like a windstorm that blew down every standing object. There was not a Seventh-day Adventist to be seen. They, like the disciples, forsook Christ and fled. All who had sought positions were never seen again.

"After the storm there was a calm, then the Adventists arose like a great flock of sheep, but there were no shepherds. They all waited in earnest prayer for help and wisdom, and the Lord answered by helping them to choose leaders from among them who had never sought positions before. They prayed earnestly for the Holy Spirit which was poured out upon them making them fully ready for service. They then went forth 'fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners,' to give this message to the world. "I was astonished, and asked if that applied to Loma Linda, as we were looking in that direction. Sister White replied to my question by stating that it applied to the entire denominational world. It so stunned me that I did not ask any more questions." --- Will Ross, Boulder, Colorado.

In the year 1943 when Elder D. E. Robinson was visiting the churches in Colorado, I was serving on the platform the Sabbath that Elder Robinson visited the Boulder Church, having with him the large Bible which Sister White held in her hand and leafing through during one of her visions.
At the close of the service Brother Ross spoke with Elder Robinson about when he, Sister Mcinterfer and Sister White were standing on the depot platform visiting together, and Sister White related to him about the terrible storm of persecution that was coming to Seventh-day Adventists. Elder Robinson replied, "Yes, Brother, Ross, I remember it."

So I documented this reply January 15, 1946, not wishing to forget this important narration related to me by Brother Ross. I frequently discussed it with him in later years, and his statement never varied. - [signed] Elmer M. Johnson.

It is not known if this statement was ever made by Ellen G. White or not. It is hearsay through Brother Ross, Elmer Johnson and E. A. Rogers. No one can prove for certain that the statement is true, but it can be proven for certain that Ezekiel 9 destruction DOES NOT occur before the National Sunday Law. It is foolhardy to apply the Will Ross statement to the literal fulfillment of Ezekiel 9, when that would contradict some very serious Bible and Spirit of Prophecy evidence as depicted in my vision at the following link.

http://omega77.tripod.com/myvisiononezekiel9aftersundaylaw.htm

God’s Word clearly says that there is ONE MORE COMING OUT of a remnant, and that includes a coming out from Jerusalem (Spiritual Jerusalem the SDA church).

Isa 37:31   And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:

Isa 37:32   For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

Isa 37:33  Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.

If the church was cleansed and purified, it would not be destroyed by Ezekiel 9 destruction and the following statement would not be true:

PROLEPSIS PROPHETIC STATEMENT:

Here is the Spirit of Prophecy prophesied prolepsis statement regarding the final fate of that once Noble Ship. This is a major LYNCHPIN to my warning message. Can you explain it away? Are you a passenger on this once NOBLE SHIP, that is about to sink to rise no more? NOTICE WHO SEPARATES FROM WHOM:

"Jesus sends HIS PEOPLE a message of warning to prepare them for his coming. To the prophet John was made known the closing work in the great plan of man's redemption. He beheld an angel flying 'in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him for the hour of his Judgment is come and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters [Rev. 14:6, 7.].

The angel represented in prophecy as delivering this message,  symbolizes a class of faithful men, who, obedient to the promptings of God's Spirit and the teachings of his word, proclaim this warning to the inhabitants of earth. This message was not to be committed to the religious leaders of the people. They had failed to preserve their connection with God, and had REFUSED THE LIGHT FROM HEAVEN therefore they WERE NOT of the number described by the apostle Paul: 'But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day we are not of the night nor of darkness' [1 Thess. 5:4, 5].

The watchmen upon the walls of Zion should be the first to catch the tidings of the Saviour's advent, the first to lift their voices to proclaim him near, the first to warn the people to prepare for his coming. But they were at ease, dreaming of peace and safety, while the people were asleep in their sins. Jesus saw HIS CHURCH, like the barren fig-tree, covered with pretentious leaves, yet destitute of precious fruit. There was a boastful observance of the forms of religion, while the spirit of true humility, penitence and faith--which alone could render the service acceptable to God--was lacking. Instead of the graces of the Spirit, there were manifested pride, formalism, vainglory, selfishness, oppression. A BACKSLIDING CHURCH closed their eyes to the signs of the times. God did nor forsake them, or suffer his faithfulness to fail but they departed from him, and SEPARATED THEMSELVES from his love. As they REFUSED TO COMPLY WITH THE CONDITIONS, his promises were NOT FULFILLED to them."  E.G. White, The Spirit of Prophecy, Vol. 4, pp. 199-200 [The 1884 edition of The Great Controversy, 199, 200].

Note these important delineations in the above statement:

·       Ellen White is addressing HIS PEOPLE.

·       Ellen White is addressing those to whom God committed the EVERLASTING GOSPEL of Revelation 14.

·       Ellen White is defining the angel represented in prophecy as symbolizing a class of faithful men.

·       Ellen White is saying emphatically that the final Loud Cry message is delivered NOT BY THE LEADERS OF THE SDA CHURCH, but by a class of faithful men, because the leaders had failed to preserve their connection with God and had refused light from heaven!

·       Ellen White is addressing "watchmen upon the walls of Zion," NOT FALLEN BABYLON!

·       Twice Ellen White mentions HIS CHURCH, NOT FALLEN BABYLON.

·       It is the MEMBERS of said church that SEPARATE FROM GOD, AND THAT IS WHY WE HAVE TO SEPARATE FROM THEM OR BE CORPORATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR APOSTASY.

·       The above reasons are why there is another coming out of a faithful remnant FROM APOSTATE JERUSALEM AS WELL AS FALLEN BABYLON.

·       Isa 37:31   And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward:

·       Isa 37:32   For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.

Ellen White is addressing a BACKSLIDING CHURCH whose leaders and laity alike failed and rejected light from heaven and who refused to comply with the conditions so that God's promises are not fulfilled to them. Consider the following commentary on the 1884 Great Controversy that the above statement is quoted from:

“Consider for a few moments the chapter in the first edition of Great Controversy, Volume IV, published by Pacific Press in 1884. In Chapter XXVII, ‘The Snares of Satan,’ you find that about four pages in the latter part of the chapter were omitted from the later editions of Great Controversy. These four pages are to be found in Testimonies to Ministers, pages 472 to 475. The information contained in these four pages is very valuable to Seventh-day Adventists and was very appropriately included in the first edition of Great Controversy, Volume IV, which when it was published was like the other volumes considered to be A MESSAGE ESPECIALLY TO SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTISTS, and to [all] Christian people sympathizing with them in beliefs and aims.” W. C. White, Selected Messages, Appendix C, pp. 452, 453.

In the last literal fulfillment of Ezekiel 9, there was a coming out of the faithful into home churches. This occurred from A.D. 34-66, at which time all the faithful Christians fled to Pella. The abomination of desolation had to occur before any fulfillment of Ezekiel 9 could occur. The abomination of desolation was the ascendance of the Roman General Cestius Gallus and his soldiers upon Jewish soil. Testimonies, Vol. 5, pp. 451, 464. Ellen White parallels that abomination to the Sunday Law at the end-time. Todd Wolcott’s teaching that Ezekiel 9 destruction occurs before the Sunday Law, would preclude the warning sign/signal of the abomination of desolation per Matthew 24:15, 16. Thus, there would be no warning of the imminent destruction and no warning as to when to flee. That is not according to God’s Word which gives the sign and signal, the apostasy of the legislation of the National Sunday Law.

If a storm of persecution destroyed all the Adventist shepherds before the National Sunday Law that would be inconsistent with the following statements:

Ezekiel 9 Destruction Twofold, but BEGINNING AT HIS CHURCH, HIS SANCTUARY

“The future was mercifully veiled from the disciples. Had they at that time fully comprehend the two awful facts-- the Redeemer's sufferings and death, and the destruction of their city and temple--they would have been overwhelmed with horror. Christ presented before them an outline of the prominent events to take place before the close of time. His words were not then fully understood; but their meaning was to be unfolded as His people should need the instruction therein given. The prophecy which He uttered was twofold in its meaning; while foreshadowing the destruction of Jerusalem, it prefigured also the terrors of the last great day.

Jesus declared to the listening disciples the judgments that were to fall upon apostate Israel, and especially the retributive vengeance that would come upon them for their rejection and crucifixion of the Messiah. Unmistakable signs would precede the awful climax. The dreaded hour would come

Page 26

suddenly and swiftly. And the Saviour warned His followers: "When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) then let them which be in Judea flee into the mountains." Matthew 24:15, 16; Luke 21:20, 21. When the idolatrous standards of the Romans should be set up in the holy ground, which extended some furlongs outside the city walls, then the followers of Christ were to find safety in flight. When the warning sign should be seen, those who would escape must make no delay. Throughout the land of Judea, as well as in Jerusalem itself, the signal for flight must be immediately obeyed. He who chanced to be upon the housetop must not go down into his house, even to save his most valued treasures. Those who were working in the fields or vineyards must not take time to return for the outer garment laid aside while they should be toiling in the heat of the day. They must not hesitate a moment, lest they be involved in the general destruction.” E.G. White, The Great Controversy, pp. 25, 26.

Begin at My Sanctuary -- "Here we see that the church--the Lord's sanctuary--was the first to feel the stroke of the wrath of God. The ancient men, those to whom God had given great light and who had stood as guardians of the spiritual interests of the people, had betrayed their trust. They had taken the position that we need not look for miracles and the marked manifestation of God's power as in former days. Times have changed. These words strengthen their unbelief, and they say: The Lord will not do good, neither will He do evil. He is too merciful to visit His people in judgment. Thus 'Peace and safety" is the cry from men who will never again lift up their voice like a trumpet to show God's people their transgressions and the house of Jacob their sins. These dumb dogs that would not bark are the ones who feel the just vengeance of an offended God. Men, maidens, and little children all perish together." E. G. White, Testimonies, Vol. 5, 211

"Study the 9th chapter of Ezekiel. These words will be literally fulfilled yet the time is passing, and the people are asleep. They refuse to humble their souls and to be converted. Not a great while longer will the Lord bear with the people who have such great and important truths revealed to them, but who refuse to bring these truths into their individual experience. The time is short. God is calling will YOU hear? Will YOU receive His message? Will YOU be converted before it is too late? Soon, very soon, every case will be decided for eternity. Letter 106, 1909, pp. 2, 3, 5, 7. (To "The churches in Oakland and Berkeley, September 26, 1909.)" E. G. White Manuscript Releases Volume One, p. 260.

“The time will soon come when the prophecy of Ezekiel 9 will be fulfilled; that prophecy should be carefully studied, for it will be fulfilled to the very letter.”— Ellen G. White 1888 Materials, p. 1303.

IF EZEKIEL 9 OCCURRED BEFORE THE NATIONAL SUNDAY LAW, THERE WOULD BE NO ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION IN PLACE AS A SIGN/SIGNAL TO FLEE. Thus, Matthew 24:15, 16, would be moot! In the PREFIGURE, Matthew 24:15, 16, were fulfilled 3 ˝ years before Ezekiel 9 destruction ensued. So it will be in the antitypical TYPE.
